There’s something about May in New York that completely changes the energy of the city.
After months of gray skies, cold weather, and everyone speed walking in giant coats, New York suddenly feels alive again. Parks fill up, flowers bloom all over the city, rooftops reopen, and every weekend starts feeling full of possibilities.
It’s one of my favorite months here because you get the best of both worlds: spring still feels beautiful and fresh, but you also start getting little previews of summer in the city.
So whether you’re visiting NYC in May or just looking for ideas for your next weekend, here are some of my favorite things to do around the city this time of year.

Visit the New Costume Institute Exhibit at The Met
Every year, the Costume Institute exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art becomes one of the biggest cultural moments in New York, especially around the Met Gala.
Even if you’re not deeply into fashion, the exhibits are always visually incredible and worth seeing at least once. They usually combine fashion, history, art, and set design in a way that feels much more immersive than a traditional museum exhibit.
And honestly, May is also just one of the nicest times to spend an afternoon at the museum. You can walk through Central Park before or after, grab coffee nearby, and make an entire spring day out of it.

Spend a Day at Coney Island
There’s something so nostalgic about Coney Island in the spring.
The boardwalk starts getting busy again, the amusement park rides reopen, and even if it’s not quite beach weather yet, it’s still such a fun escape from Manhattan for the day.
I feel like Coney Island is one of those classic New York experiences everyone should do at least once. Walk the boardwalk, get a hot dog, play arcade games, maybe go on a few rides, and just lean into the chaos a little.
It feels very old-school NYC in the best way.

Catch the Last Spring Blooms Around the City
May might honestly be peak flower season in New York.
You still catch cherry blossoms in some areas early in the month, but there are also tulips, wisteria, magnolias, and so many random streets around the city that suddenly look beautiful for about two weeks.
A few of my favorite places for spring blooms:
- Central Park
- Brooklyn Botanic Garden
- West Village
- Greenwich Village
- Roosevelt Island
This is also the time of year when New York feels especially walkable. I always end up wandering way more in May because the weather is finally nice enough to spend hours outside again.

Play Pickleball at Wollman Rink
One of the more unexpected spring activities in NYC lately: pickleball at Wollman Rink.
The combination of skyline views + Central Park + being outside all afternoon is honestly hard to beat.
Even if you’ve never played before, it’s one of those activities that’s fun mostly because of the atmosphere. It feels very “New York in spring.”

Check Out Seasonal Museum Exhibits
Rainy spring days in NYC are basically made for museums.
Besides The Met, May is usually a great time for new exhibits around the city before the heavy summer crowds arrive.
A few museums I always recommend:
- Museum of Modern Art
- Whitney Museum of American Art
- Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
- The Morgan Library & Museum
I also love using museum days as an excuse to explore neighborhoods nearby after.

Go to a Yankees or Mets Game
Even if you’re not a huge baseball person, going to a game in New York is such a fun experience.
A New York Yankees or New York Mets game is less about intensely following every inning and more about the atmosphere: stadium food, sunset over the field, people watching, and spending hours outside with friends.
Baseball season also somehow makes the city feel like summer is officially approaching.

Have a Rooftop Drink at Golden Hour
Rooftop season officially comes back to life in May.
The first warm evenings of the year in NYC always feel a little magical because everyone suddenly wants to be outside again after winter.
Some rooftops feel very scene-y, others are more relaxed, but honestly the best part is usually just seeing the skyline at golden hour with a drink in hand after a long day walking around the city.
A rooftop evening in May is peak New York energy.
May is one of those months that reminds me why I love living in New York so much.
The city feels lighter, prettier, and more spontaneous again. You can spend an entire day outside without a real plan and somehow still end up having the perfect spring day.
If you’re visiting NYC in May, definitely take advantage of how beautiful the city feels this time of year because it really is one of the best seasons to experience New York.
